Yes, I get that. However, that means that they will still need to produce general purpose computers and versions of Mac OS X that expose the file system and external device interfaces (since there are no restrictions on the apps in those respects). Which means that they still need to produce general purpose computers ... There is a logical inconsistency here.

I think it is far more likely that they want to have a single place where consumers can go to get applications instead of Googling for apps/reviews and putting up with dodgy net payment systems (aka making the end-user's life easier). It may also be a source of additional revenue (the 30% cut).

Occams razor and all that ...
