I think I've figured this out (more or less).  It seems that there is  
some nasty interaction between having open file descriptors in certain  
states and event processing.  I'm running a little web server, and  
every now and then I get into a state where event processing seems to  
be on hold.  I can't open new windows, evaluate forms, etc.  I'll try  
to come up with a reliable way to reproduce the problem and file a bug  
report.
