If anyone knew what your old method was or how it was failing you,
they might be able to do something other than guess.

One guess is that the Xcode commmand-line tools (and related headers
and/or libraries) aren't fully installed.  One way of ensuring that
they are is to run

$ xcode-select --install

at a shell prompt.

Of course, that's just a guess ...
