TMUX fixed it (and I assume screen would as well, since it is also a multiplexer). Thanks for your help!

Use tmux instead. Tmux (short for terminal multiplexer) will keep the terminal session open for you even after you disconnect from it, and you will additionally be able to access the teminal REPL afterwards by connecting to the tmux session.
