Exactly so.  If you want x, don't sit aroind complaining that CL doesn't have x: write a thing that does x.  That is, quite literally, how CLOS arrived in Common Lisp, as anyone who can remember fetching and building PCL releases from Xerox knows.  If CLOS can arrive as a library, anything can.
