This morning I'm calling this the "gateway computer" model (sic). In
so far as Apple can make it nearly impossible to route around the app
store they can give away the hardware and make it up on the razor
blades. This, of course, require taking control of the compiler tool
chain, and drawing developers further into the thrall of their IDEs.
But Microsoft had pretty good luck with that; and the game box
developers and the telcos have had pretty good luck limiting
developers ability to route around their garden walls.
The chance that Apple will say "We own your tool chain dudes!" is zero.
